- Giant Poppies
Significant Seams’ staff and volunteers will be out and about at events all over Waltham Forest, getting lots of local community members involved in making giant poppies.
We collect the gigantic cardboard tubes from rolls of fabric, as well as using empty kitchen towel rolls, and wrap them with green fabrics to make stems. We create templates for poppy leaves, and use giant circles of fabric to make enormous Suffolk puffs that will become the petals of a poppy. The three elements – tube for the stem, pattern for the leaves, and Suffolk puffs for the flower – are combined to create poppies bigger than most children. In the festival environment, groups of children can work together to thread, then draw, the strings that create a flower, which will be ‘planted’ with all the others to create a Giant’s Garden.
