Upcycling – old
This programme encourages creativity and provides individualised teaching to each participant. We try to break down barriers that might be affecting your confidence – whether with sewing or more broadly. We have a good laugh and ask “why not?” rather than why? We experiment with clothes previously destined for the charity shop with the aim of moving on to items full of sentiment.
“I am so glad Isabel told me about your up-cycling class at the Mill. I was not really expecting to have any help with the problems I have always had in finding clothes to wear that I am comfortable in. I thought it was too big a subject for a ‘handicrafts’ class…it was liberating to actually unpick my linen tunic! I like the material and it was wonderful to have practical and inspirational help to turn it into a top which I am going to love….So the valuable experience for me was of having fantastic help, support and inspiration for my own projects and I felt happy making progress with the projects within the companionship of the group.”
What is Upcycling? It’s taking something destined for the charity shop or bin and refashioning it into something especially interesting and desirable. Or maybe just using it to learn some new techniques, build your confidence and not feeling too intimidated to experiment!
It’s also a fun, social sewing session which encourages crazy ideas and ends in fabulous creations. (Our last series resulted in a kermit the frog kid’s dress, several doll outfits, a hand printed pot holder, and a patchwork lap quilt made from old sweaters. )
We will deploy and explore whatever techniques and skills seem most appropriate to your project, including learning to use a sewing machine, or a particular hand stitch. We will talk about the various features and considerations that come with various fabrics, and generally learn how to most effectively break the rules when inspiration strikes!
You’ll be asked to bring some items for up cycling to the first class with some ideas of how you wish they would be…. and we’ll go from there.
This programme is £40 per session or £150 for four weeks if the series is block booked in advance and paid in full by the first session. Book online on our eventbrite page.
