Moments are like butterflies, fleeting. Held with love, moments become memories, forever lasting.

In January 2020 I began the Moretonhampstead Memory Blanket, a community wide textile project that invites treasured memories which can be stitched, appliqued, painted or drawn onto fabric.  These can be of a toy, person, house, pet, gadget, mixing bowl…anything that symbolises significant things, places, relationships, work or play in a person’s life.  The resulting textile memories will be gathered and stitched onto a large woollen blanket.

At that time, the Art Raft creativity group I run was aimed at socially isolated older people living with early to middle stage dementia. (Art Raft now has a wider audience.)

Even though memories of occupation, relationships, places lived may fall away, the essence of who a person is remains.  My practice had evolved to engage with people in the moment, meeting and responding to them where they are today.  This is in direct contrast to the ‘standard’ practice of working with people living with dementia using cognitive stimulation and prompts to activate memories.

This process of meeting people in the moment gave me the space to think into what memory means to me.  My life is made up of many millions of moments.  Why do some become memories?

The first Textile Memories were made in Art Raft prior to Covid.  During Lockdown I created packs and a hamper of art & sewing supplies that was circulated to individuals in the town and to residents of the local care home.  In August 2021, we had our first outdoor public community-wide event since the pandemic began where I set up a marquee and invited memories from children and adults.

I now have over 100 textile memories from our community.  The final workshops will gather Jubilee Memories & Messages and the Memory Blanket will be stitched together over the summer.

I still ponder the meaning and mechanism of Memory, but as I learn to embrace the moment and live more fully in the Now my life becomes richer and I more deeply treasure my memories, both old and newly made.
