How will your donation help?

Many of the women who participate in Significant Seams’ Sew & Tell ESL programme have only had education to the age of 12. From Pakistan, Eritrea, Turkey, Somalia, Romania – in some cases via several refugee camps in other places around the world – these women have significant wisdom, humour, and determination. However, they haven’t had the education they now need to thrive in the UK. Thank you for your gift which will help us continue our provision of support to them.

Our ESL programme gives vulnerable women new confidence, independence, and breaks down the distinctive isolation of a language barrier. Each hour of teaching costs us £50, between materials, prep time, facilities and teaching – a cost that could never be met by the women attending classes. Your contribution helps a cohort of women take control of their lives and thrive in our community.

Sew and Tell ESL helps isolated women with low literacy in any language to improve their English in a supportive and creative environment. It costs £100 per session to deliver, and we need support to continue running this innovative and impactful programme.

Sew and Tell ESL helped inspire the Women of The World Quilt – which has found its way into primary school classrooms, to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, to an art exhibition in Lambeth, South London, and to the Feminism in London Annual Conference at the Institute of Education. This project encapsulates a great deal about Significant Seams – about our diverse programme and project participants, about our values and inclusiveness, about how our ideas – and impacts – tend to grow rather than finish.

Thank you for helping us to change lives and keep Significant Seams, and our clients, independent: financially, creatively, and intellectually.
