Craftivism: Giving Voice through Community Development – Old No. 1
Our community projects use an empowering model of engagement that invites local people to respond to a question via a range of textile art and craft techniques. Participants contribute to a project that reflects – and sometimes positively progresses – our community’s beliefs and thoughts.
Currently our outreach work is exploring symbolism, mental health issues, the changing roles of women, and why World War I is relevant to our lives 100 years on. We are also one of three groups collaborating globally to deliver “You are so very Beautiful,” an action initiated by Betsy Greer.
Our outreach work is particularly unified via the project The Giant’s Garden.
It also includes our:
- Sew & Tell ESL programme (twice weekly in term time, confirm details),
- Socially Supportive Stitching (weekly, Thursdays 1-3) and
- Neighbourly Knit & Stitch (Monthly, confirm details).
We take our programmes and projects out to community events and groups as much as possible, courtesy of a range of grants, contracts, and sponsorship support.
Find out about our upcoming outreach activities via our Eventbrite calendar, or our latest schedule – which you can pick-up at 131 Wood Street.
