BIRTHRIGHT – Journeys of Reconnection, Meet the Artist, 16 Oct 2021
Significant Seams Associate Artist Melinda Schwakhofer is one of two artists featured in the latest show at the distinguished Rainmaker Gallery, Bristol. For over 30 years Rainmaker has been the only dedicated contemporary Native American art gallery in the UK and Europe.
MEET THE ARTIST Melinda will be on site to greet exhibition-goers on Saturday 16 October, 11am-5pm.
Melinda told the Bristol Magazine, “Identity – or the search for it – is at the core of much of what I do. I recognise that I am at the confluence of many different streams. My Mvskoke heritage mingles with my Austrian-American-English ancestry. Add in lived experience and – just like everyone – my identity is unique yet shares many experiences with millions of other people. It is the paradox of being human – the uniqueness of each one of us in a world where we cannot exist without cooperating.”
The Exhibition, Birthright – Journeys of Reconnection is dedicated to all people experiencing journeys of cultural disconnection or reconnection. In a post-colonial world, millions of people find themselves growing up at distance from their ancestral homelands. The lived experience of being separated from genetic heritage and cultures can sometimes be confusing or even invalidating.
Melinda (Muscogee and Austrian-American) and her co-exhibitor Jasmine Coe (Wiradjuri-British) are on a journey to reconnect with their Indigenous heritage through their work, with hopes that their experiences will resonate with people of mixed race who have grown up with a disconnect to one side of their heritage, as well as myriad other art lovers, regardless of ethnicity.
Both recently spoke with The Bristol Magazine about their work and the exhibition. Read more HERE. The exhibition runs until 29 October 2021.
